Allison Waddell

Licensed Massage Therapist

Allison M. Waddell hails from North Wilkesboro, NC, currently resides in Raleigh, NC, but considers herself a global citizen. She has been using movement and the innate wisdom of the body as a tool to understand herself and the mysteries of the world her entire life. From being a competitive gymnast and avid horseback rider as a child, to a professional dancer, teacher and choreographer, to currently a yoga teacher and massage therapist, Allison has spent her life exploring, performing and teaching the movement arts.

Allison has degrees in Dance and Speech Communication from Meredith College, and has spent the last two decades traveling nationally and internationally facilitating the movement arts. She has danced in the works of Laura Dean, Amy Chavasse and countless other choreographers and has been a collaborative member of Even Exchange Dance Theater. She is a founding member of the contact improvisation quartet THEM, and a directing member of the highly experimental dance collective Zen Monkey Project. She has been on faculty and guest faculty teaching yoga, dance, improvisation and choreography at many schools, universities and institutions in the United States and abroad, including Ishta Yoga, New York Yoga, Enloe High School, New York City Public Schools, Charleston Birth Place, Meredith College, Mimar Sinan University in Istanbul, Turkey and the Universidad De Las Americas in Cholula, Mexico.

While living in NYC, Allison completed her 200hr yoga teacher training from Yogaworks, and she completed her 300hr advanced yoga teacher training from Kaya Yoga, with Kristin Leal. Additionally she studied meditation and received more advanced training at ISHTA yoga from Kavi Yogiraj Alan Finger. Also, while living in New York, she worked as a teaching artist in the New York City public schools integrating literacy and movement and other art forms through ALLL (Active Learning Leads to Literacy).

Following the birth of her daughter, Kysa, Allison combined her passion for natural childbirth and yoga to become a certified doula and taught prenatal yoga at the Charleston Birth Place, and supported many births in the Charleston, SC community helping moms and their partners move and om their way through beautiful births. While in Charleston, Allison also had the pleasure of deepening her yogic studies with Jeffrey Rama Cohen and Anrdrea Boyd at the Jivimukti Yoga school.

In 2012, Allison’s life dramatically changed when her family relocated to Raleigh and adopted Wynray, a baby boy from Ethiopia. Allison has spent the last five intense years seeking to find balance for herself and the ever changing needs of her young family. Her world view has been transformed by becoming a mother via international adoption, her views on social justice and human rights have been informed and charged as a mother of a transracial family, and her compassion and understanding for people who live in the aftermath of trauma has developed as she works tirelessly to provide a safe place of growth and healing for her son and family.

Allison believes all her life experiences inform her work as a yoga teacher and massage therapist. When not practicing yoga or massage you can find Allison running, hiking, or traveling with her family. She gives thanks to all her teachers, especially her greatest gurus…her family.
